Welcomes you to
10th Anniversary Trans Am
In 1979, Pontiac celebrated the Trans Am’s 10th anniversary with a special Trans Am model. The car was painted two tone charcoal over silver, with red and black accent striping. It had a special hood bird that extended over the fenders. It had polished aluminum "turbo" style wheels. It had silver leather seating surfaces with a two tone gray/silver interior. It had special door panels with an embroidered bird and no window crank hole, as well as an embroidered bird on the center of the rear seat back. It had a leather wrapped steering wheel, red back light gauges and the automatic equipped cars had an "engine turned" shifter plate to match the dash bezel. The cars T-tops were mirrored instead of the usual polarized "smoked" appearance. Some 10th Anniversary’s were delivered with Nascar Pace Car decals on the doors and quarter panels to recognize that the Trans Am was chosen to pace the Daytona 500 that year. Pontiac built 7,500 10th Anniversary Trans Ams. 1,817 were built with the Pontiac 220 hp 400 engine and Borg Warner Super T-10 4 speed transmission. The remainder had the Olds built 180 hp 403 engine and a TH 350 automatic. The 400/4 speed cars had a "T/A 6.6" decal on the shaker scoop, while the 403/Automatic cars said "6.6 liter". All 10th Anniversary Trans Ams have an "X" as the 2nd digit of their VIN and have the Y89 10th Anniversary Trans Am Option indicated on their build sheets. The tenth anniversary Trans Am model was designated as the - TATA (Tenth Anniversary Trans Am) by Pontiac.
