Special Edition 'Blackbird'
Trans Am's
From 1976 through
1981 Pontiac offered the Black Special Edition (S.E.) option package on the
Trans Am (known as the limited edition or L.E. in 1976). These cars are often
called "Bandits" after the Movie "Smokey and the Bandit" in
which Burt Reynolds drove some of these specially optioned cars (1977 models).
Although the option package changed from year to year, the basics were the same.
They were black cars with gold decals and gold factory pinstripes. They had
gold dash bezels and through 1979 had gold steering wheel spokes. In addition,
they had gold nose emblems, gold horn button emblems and power window equipped
cars had gold door emblems. They also had large gold sail panel decals. They
were offered with black or camel interiors (some S.E.'s were special ordered
with interior colors such as red or white). They also could be
ordered with or without most other Trans Am options, including engine and transmission
choices.

*Note: many sources list all SE's as mandatory equipped with T-tops. Pontiac actually offered a cash-back credit to the buyers of SE's who opted to delete the T-top hatch roofs. And Factory literature shows all SE's to have T-Tops. Several are known to exist minus T-Tops. Just like the production numbers, exact details are up for discussion. Over the years I have been contacted by many experts, so - " Let the debate begin!" Remember: It's just a hobby!
